Researchers from IBM and VU Amsterdam have found a new vulnerability, called "GhostRace," that affects Intel, AMD, ARM, and IBM processors by exploiting speculative execution features.

This vulnerability bypasses synchronization primitives, or controls against race conditions, in any operating system they are implemented in. A race condition occurs when two or more processes access a shared computing resource at the same time, which can cause data corruption, memory leaks, and security bypasses.

Operating systems use speculative primitives to control access to shared resources to prevent these issues. However, the researchers found a way to bypass these mechanisms by targeting the speculative execution feature in modern processors. They informed hardware vendors of their discovery and recommended following previous guidance to protect against this type of attack.
