Minisforum V3 Tablet: A 3-in-1 Surface Pro Alternative

One of the extremely interesting announcements that I have seen recently is the Minisforum v3 AMD-powered tablet. The new Minisforum v3 is surely going to be a great contender in the space of ultra portable, multi-functional tablets like the Microsoft Surface Pro. Let's take a look at the specs of the new Minisforum V3 and see what it brings to the table in this space.

A 3-in-1 device

The Minisforum V3 is a 3-in-1 device that is powered by the AMD Ryzen architecture. Interestingly, you will probably notice it is described as a 3-in-1, and not a 2-in-1. What roles can the V3 play? It can serve as the following:

  • Tablet

  • Computer

  • External monitor

Note the following features of the V3 at a high level from Minisforum.

AMD Ryzen and Radeon Integration

The Minisforum V3 is one of the first tablets powered by the new generation of AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor. The processor is complemented by the AMD Radeon 780M graphics. This combination of processing power and graphics in the V3 means it is a very high-performance machine capable of handling demanding tasks and applications.

The use cases here certainly include the standard and common ones, such as business productivity, design work, multimedia entertainment, or casual web browsing. The Ryzen and Radeon combination includes sustained performance release and it can intelligently adjust power consumption for optimal efficiency in a Windows tablet.

A Display That Captivates

The Minisforum V3 has a 14-inch 2.5K touch screen with a 165Hz refresh rate. The display is set to deliver excellent visual clarity and smoothness if Minisforum has executed this correctly. This screen covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It also shines at a brightness of 500 nits. These display specs will make it great for creators and consumers.

Connectivity and controls/buttons

The Minisforum V3 has a good number of connectivity options.

  • USB-4 USB C ports (up to 40 Gbps)

  • Power button and fingerprint reader combo

  • VLink (DP in)

  • SD Card slot

  • Volume up/down

  • Audio Jack

The DP-in video input port may not seem strikingly obvious on what you would use that for. This turns your V3 into a high-resolution external monitor for various use cases. You can link it up with mini PCs for an extended workspace for gaming sessions.

Design and mobility

The V3 is encased in a magnesium alloy body but also weighs less than a kilogram. Like a Surface Pro, the detachable keyboard and it supports a professional touch pen which transforms it from a tablet to a laptop or a creative tool.

Cooling System and Battery Life

With compact devices that also have a very performant processor and GPU, efficient cooling is important. The Minisforum V3 has dual fans and four copper tubes. This design should keep the V3 cool during intensive tasks. Complementing this is the tablet's large-capacity battery, supported by PD 65W fast charging, ensuring that you stay powered through your day.

Thoughts

The Minisforum V3 will be a great option it looks like for a multi-function table, computer, and monitor with the AMD Ryzen CPU. It will be great to see the hands on impressions with the unit to see real-world battery performance and other tests.
