NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10 Beta Released New Features

NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10 beta released new features - new interface, VMware vSphere 7 support, Wasabi storage, physical Linux workstation backups

NAKIVO is back at it again with a new beta release available for download. I am not sure how they have remained so productive during a global pandemic, but they have. They keep turning out new releases and great new features and capabilities to boot. This release is no exception to that rule. Let’s take a look at NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10 beta released new features and see what new functionality is contained in the release.

NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10 New Features

There are some really big items in this release that many will no doubt be glad to hear. I am excited about the first one on the list and there are many others that are great features with this release as well. What are they?

  • New interface!
  • VMware vSphere 7 support
  • File System Indexing
  • Full P2V Recovery
  • Backup to Wasabi storage
  • Linux Workstation Backup

Let’s take a look at each of these one-by-one and see what new capabilities they bring to the table.

New Interface

The first thing that will strike you about the new NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10 release is the new interface! Yes, a new interface look and feel to the solution.

From the time I have spent with the new beta release, I like the new look. It certainly is an upgrade to the previous appearance of the web interface. They have changed the focus of your navigation workflow from the top ribbon over to the left-side panel.

I like this change as it is much more intuitive to find the action you are looking for or task you are looking to perform/configure. Most may be like me now and trained with “muscle memory” from many other solutions that have adopted this type of layout. It works well.

VMware vSphere 7 support

This is a big one. VMware recently released the newest installment in the line of their vSphere ESXi hypervisor technology in the form of VMware vSphere 7. It is a revolutionary new release that contains many new and exciting features, including having Kubernetes built into the platform.

One of the main blockers to upgrading your underlying hypervisor powering your virtual environment is your backup solution. After all, you would never be able to sanely upgrade your production infrastructure to the latest hypervisor version without being able to protect your workloads.

Generally when hypervisors are upgraded, the APIs and calls to the hypervisor are generally modified in some way or changed altogether in such a way that the backup solution, if not updated for compatibility, will not work.

While Veeam beat NAKIVO to vSphere 7 support just by a few weeks, it is great to see that NAKIVO has quickly released a new version that will fully support the new hypervisor platform.

One of the first things I wanted to check after spinning up a new NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10 environment was to see if it had any issues connecting to a nested vSphere 7 environment I had running in the home lab. As you can see, no issues connecting to the vSphere 7 environment.

File System Indexing

File system indexing is a new feature found in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10 that creates a global index of the files and folders inside your VM backup and allows more efficiently and effectively finding the files you need to recover. Using the global search feature allows finding the item for recovery much easier.

What does an index do? Without a file index, the search for a particular object must carry out a slow and cumbersome search through all file resources to find the itme being looked for. With a file index in place, a file search for a random record an quickly and easily return a record given its file key.

An index is like a quick map of where everything is stored. This allows a search to take a major shortcut to where the file is located instead of having to search through each and every file and folder.

Full P2V Recovery

Another new item listed with the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10 beta release is full P2V recovery. With this version of NAKIVO, recovery physical machines from backups to VMware VMs or easily P2V physical to virtual machines.

The full P2V recovery involves creating virtual copies of physical machines ready to be transitioned into production.

Backup to Wasabi storage

Wasabi cloud storage is a cloud storage provider providing simple, cheap, and fast cloud storage at 1/5th the cost of competitors. A few points related to Wasabi storage include:

  • 80% less than AWS S3
  • Faster than competitors with quick uploads and downloads
  • Extremely resilient with (11) 9s of data durability, multiple data centers, and immutable storage.

Wasabi’s cloud storage makes a lot of sense for data protection as there are no charges for egress or API requests. This means if you need to restore a large amount of data from Wasabi storage, you are not charged for the data that leaves the environment.

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10, this is a great addition to the already strong portfolio of cloud data storage providers that can be targeted by the solution.

Linux workstation backup

NAKIVO has certainly been strengthening their capabilities on the physical backup side of things. Up to this release, NAKIVO has added many physical workload capabilities to their backup solution including Windows Servers, Windows client operating systems, and Linux servers.

Now with the NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10 release, NAKIVO has added Linux workstation backup to the feature list. What does this include? You can now perform incremental backups of physical Linux workstations running Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04.

You can also perform full workstation recovery or granular file and object restores from the NAKIVO backup repository from the compressed and deduplicated backups on disk.

NAKIVO Backup and Replication v10 Beta – Another great release

NAKIVO has been continually pumping out new releases despite the global pandemic that has been underway since earlier this year. I have been surprised at the number of new features contained in each new release and the major new functionality that has been brought to the table.

The v10 release for NAKIVO is no doubt a milestone with a new interface that provides a much better look and feel to the platform. The interface with NAKIVO has always been quick, intuitive, and easy. However, the new UI will make things flow along even better with a left-side navigation menu that is even easier to navigate and carry out workflows.

NAKIVO has added features more rapidly to their platform than any other backup vendor that I have seen on the market. Most move at a much slower pace.

If you are looking for a vendor that is on the bleeding edge of adding new features and giving customers the tools they need across their various environments, NAKIVO is no doubt a great solution to solve many technical and business challenges.
