Today with a signature even from Veeam, the newest release in the Veeam portfolio of products was released to the public today. Veeam Availability Suite V10 contains many new features that make this the most powerful version of Veeam that has been released to date. In this post, we will be covering the Veeam Availability Suite V10 release and the new features contained therein.
Veeam Backup and Replication V10 Download Released New Features
This release has been noted by Veeam to contain over 150 new features, so it is massive! However, there are certainly those features that stand out among others in this release. What are the major new features contained in the Veeam Availability Suite V10 release? Let’s consider the following:
- Instant Recovery for multiple VMs and ANY Veeam backup to vSphere
- NAS Backup
- Capacity Tier with Copy Mode and Ransomware Protection
- Linux Veeam Proxies
- Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
Instant Recovery for Multiple VMs and ANY Veeam Backup
Veeam refers to the Instant Recovery engine contained in Veeam Availability Suite v10 as “next-generation”. It has been significantly enhanced in this release which allows customers to have even better tools and capabilities at their fingertips. This helps to actually create new possibilities and use cases for the technology.
What is new in Veeam Availability Suite v10 as far as Instant Recovery technology? With v10 it does so many things for you under the hood that makes the technology rock solid and extremely capable. The v10 Instant Recovery engine intelligently interacts with storage for much higher performance.
New features with Instant Recovery include the following: Multi-VM instant recovery, and the ability to instantly recovery ANY Veeam backup to vSphere. The Multi-VM instant recovery feature allows you to rapidly recover in several situations. If you have a business-critical application that is affected by an outage, you most likely would want to instantly recovery multiple VMs to the same restore point in time.
Instant recovery has been expanded to allow restoring many other types of backups to VMware vSphere via the Instant Recovery process. This includes backups made by Veeam Agents, Veeam Backup & Replication AHV Proxy and cloud-based backups.
With modern NAS backup, Veeam Availability Suite V10 allows for scalable SMB/NFS backups, flexible data protection through long and short-term retention policies, easily restore SMB/NFS files to any target. You can restore an entire NAS device to a point in time (think ransomware attack). Files can also be restored granularly as well.
This Enhanced NAS Backup supports – SMB v1 v2 v3, NFS v3 4.1, Windows File Server, Linux File Server, very flexible. Changed File Tracking allows extremely efficient backups using the new NAS backup functionality.
It is also snapshot friendly, utilizing storage-based snapshots where possible. It can bypass file locks and intelligently retry before the job finishes.
Capacity Tier with Copy Mode and Ransomware Protection
Copy mode is a new policy feature that is set on the Capacity Tier extend of a Scale Out Backup Repository (SOBR). When this feature is enabled, any backup files created with standard backups or backup copy job, it will be copied to the Capacity Tier.
Many modern ransomware variants actually target backup files, including Veeam. However, with Veeam Availability Suite v10, Veeam is able to protect your backups by leveraging Amazon S3 storage with S3 Object lock. With Amazon S3 object lock, you can store objects using a write-nce-read-many (WORM) model for I/O. This prevents an object from being deleted or overwritten for a fixed amount of time or indefinitely.
Amazon S3 object lock provides two ways to manage object retention: retention periods and legal holds.
A retention period specifies a fixed period of time during which an object remains locked. During this period, your object is WORM-protected and can’t be overwritten or deleted.
A legal hold provides the same protection as a retention period, but it has no expiration date. Instead, a legal hold remains in place until you explicitly remove it. Legal holds are independent from retention periods.
There is said to be a similar solution in the works with Azure storage as well that Veeam will no doubt make use of.
Linux Veeam Proxies
Linux Veeam Proxies are now possible with Veeam Avaialbility Suite v10. This will be hugely powerful for environments since they will no longer have to make use of Windows Servers for the proxy role.
This holds out several advantages for your environment, including smaller disk requirement and no Windows licensing required. Supported distros include Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Debian and supports Hot-Add functionality.
Continuous Data Protection (CDP) (Still Outstanding)
When you have tier-1 VMs, you may have the need to have extremely aggressive RPO objects. With Veeam Availability Suite v10, continuous data protection (CDP) has been introduced to allow RPOs down to 15 seconds.
It leverages VMware’s vSphere API for I/O filtering which reliably redirects VM I/O to the replica VM without VM snapshots all on a customizable schedule to align with desired RPO.
