TerraMaster just released the TOS 7 public beta, and this one feels like more than just a minor update. It looks like a full refresh of their NAS OS. It has a lot of visual and under the hood improvements. If you have a TerraMaster box sitting in a home lab or running non critical workloads, this is probably worth a look.

TOS 7 is part of TerraMaster’s long term OS overhaul, and from what they are showing in this release, they are clearly trying to modernize the platform and clean up a lot of rough edges from older versions.

Here are some of the bigger changes that stand out in the beta.

What’s new in TOS 7 beta

  • A completely redesigned interface that looks cleaner and more modern than TOS 6

  • A lot of performance tuning and general polish across the OS

  • A newer Linux 6.x kernel, which should help with newer hardware and drivers

  • A revamped file manager with a more desktop style experience

  • Tabbed browsing and split view in the file manager, which is long overdue

  • Built in ISO mounting and a single unified recycle bin

  • Ability to mount remote folders directly in the OS

  • Online document editing for office type files without downloading them first

  • Faster and more accurate global search

  • Improvements to TNAS.online for remote access

From a home lab point of view, the kernel upgrade will be interesting. Better hardware support and performance improvements come with the new kernel and these are always welcome, especially if you are using newer NVMe drives or faster networking.

A quick reality check before installing

  • This is still a beta, so you will have bugs and rough edges

  • Definitely do not install it on anything mission critical

  • Backup your data first, then test

  • Some early testers say upgrades went fine, but that is never a guarantee with beta software

If you like testing new NAS software or have a TerraMaster box doing backup duty, media storage, or lab work, TOS 7 beta looks like a fun one to play with. If your NAS is your only copy of important data, waiting for the stable release is probably the smart move.

Anyone here already running it? Curious if you have gone through the upgrade?
