What is DevOps?

In this video, I introduce DevOps from a practical IT and infrastructure perspective and explain what the term actually means beyond the buzzwords. Rather than treating DevOps as a collection of tools, I focus on the core ideas behind it: people, process, automation, and feedback. I walk through why DevOps developed in the first place, including the traditional handoff problem between development and operations teams. We look at how siloed workflows can create delays, manual effort, configuration drift, and the familiar “it works on my system” problem. From there, I explain how DevOps changes the model by encouraging shared ownership, repeatable workflows, and automation.

I also cover the DevOps lifecycle and why the infinity symbol is such a good representation of the process. We move through planning, coding, building, testing, releasing, deploying, operating, and monitoring, then look at how feedback from production feeds directly into the next change. This naturally leads into continuous integration and continuous delivery or deployment. I also explain why Git, Docker, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, and similar technologies are not DevOps by themselves. They are tools that support the larger process.

Finally, I bring everything back to a simple home lab and infrastructure example using Git, automated validation, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring, logs, metrics, and health checks. The goal is to show how DevOps turns manual knowledge into workflows that are versioned, repeatable, testable, and observable. This lesson provides the foundation for the rest of the course as we move into Git, CI/CD, containers, Infrastructure as Code, automation, and monitoring.
