About this video
In this video, I walk through one of the first configuration changes you should make when setting up Proxmox VE in a home lab. This is an important one. Switching from the default enterprise repository to the Proxmox no-subscription repository. A new Proxmox VE installation comes out of the box to use the enterprise repository, which needs you to have a valid paid subscription. Without one, refreshing the available updates will give you an unauthorized 401 error or an access-denied message. This can be confusing for new users who expect an open-source platform to download updates immediately after installation.
We start by looking at the difference between the Proxmox enterprise and no-subscription repositories and why the enterprise repository generates an error without an active subscription. I then demonstrate how to disable the PVE enterprise repository using the Proxmox web interface and add the correct Proxmox VE no-subscription repository for a home lab. We also configure the Ceph Tentacle no-subscription repository so that Ceph packages can be updated if you plan to use Ceph storage in your Proxmox environment. Finally, we refresh the repository information again and confirm that package lists download successfully without the previous 401 unauthorized error.
By the end of this tutorial, you will understand where Proxmox VE gets its updates, why the default repository may not work in an unsubscribed home lab, and how to configure the correct repository without editing configuration files manually. This is a basic but essential step for keeping a new Proxmox VE server secure, current, and ready for the rest of your home lab configuration.
