I am curious if anyone else has seen this or how many are interested in a 5 Gbps adapter? I just spotted this new release from Ubiquiti, the UACC-Adapter-RJ45-USBC-5GE. It looks like a great deal for anyone wanting multi-gig speeds without going all the way to 10GbE pricing and it is backwards compatible.

Price: $49 USD

Interfaces: a 5 GbE RJ45 port + a USB Type-C port

Design: Small, lightweight (38g), with aluminum housing

OS Support: Windows 7 through 11, macOS 14.2+, and Linux

Other things to note: According to the page, it looks like it offers backward compatibility saying it is also a "gigabit port"

Why might this be something worthy to check out or upgrade to?

If you are looking for multi gigabit speeds for your laptops, mini PCs, or even home lab servers that only have 1GbE onboard currently, this might be the way to go

This fits "price wise" between 2.5GbE dongles and pricey 10GbE adapters

This might be handy in lab setups where you don’t want to mess with PCIe NICs especially for mini PCs or other small form factors

I mean, at $49, this feels like a great option compared to other 5GbE adapters out there that often cost in the neighborhood of $80–$100. Anyone else planning to grab one of these to test in a home lab? Would love to hear about your thoughts on 5GbE in general.
